Alan G. Petersen – age 50, of Laurens, IA passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, IA, from results of a traffic accident.
Alan Gene Petersen was born September 5, 1959, in Sheldon, Iowa. He was the son of Larry and Helen (Van Abbema) Petersen. He grew up in George, IA and graduated from George High School in 1978. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Northern Iowa. In 1983, Alan married Jean Groen, they had two sons, Joseph and Andrew. Alan taught science in the Laurens-Marathon High School for 27 years.
Al was a member of the United Methodist Church. He was active in his church and community and became Junior Warden in the Masonic Lodge. He loved the outdoors, his students, his motorcycle, music, his family and especially his two sons.
He is survived by his two sons, Andrew at the University of Iowa and Joseph at the University of Nebraska law school in Lincoln, NE; parents Larry and Helen Petersen of George; brothers, Ronald (Diane) of Charleston, MO and Kenneth (Alessandra) of Council Bluffs; sister, Vicki (Richard) Backlund of Walla Walla, WA; three nieces; two nephews and his soul mate, Leisa Finley of Laurens.
Alan was preceded in death by his Grandfather and Grandmother Petersen, Grandfather and Grandmother Van Abbema and infant niece, Margo Petersen.
