Obituary

Dr. Albert G. Smith passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, in Shreveport, LA after a brief illness.

Dr. Smith, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. David English Smith, was a native of Charleston, Missouri where he graduated from high school with many honors. He received his M.D. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was in the medical fraternity. He interned and did his residencies at St. Luke's, St. Louis, Columbia University, and Duke University.

He was on the staff of Duke Hospital in Durham, NC as an Associate Professor for 17 years, where he met his wife, and their children were born. He then spent four years in Memphis, TN as Deputy Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the University of Tennessee Medical School. He came to Shreveport when the new medical school was being formed (1969-70) as the first Chairman of Pathology and was the last one of the founding group to retire.

He was an extremely benevolent man and gave generously to the arts, especially the Symphony and Opera. He was active in numerous community affairs and belonged to First United Methodist Church, The Shreveport Club, Shreveport Country Club, Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club, East Ridge Country Club, the Cotillion Club, and he was a Rotarian.

He and his wife were the first to endow a chair at LSU Medical School. He was published in many medical journals and belonged to numerous medical societies, including the American Medical Association and American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists, the American Association for Advancement of Science, among many others.

In addition to his accomplishments, his main passion in life was his devotion to his family. He was deeply loved by many.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Harriet Gurley Smith; his precious daughter, Susan Reid Smith Erba, of Middleburg, VA; his devoted son, Alan English Smith, who lived many years in Los Altos, CA and now lives in Shreveport, LA; his brother, Dr. David English Smith and his wife, Peggy, of Austin, TX; his sister, Mary Ann Smith, of Charleston, MO; brother-in-law, George Morris Gurley, of New York City, NY; and sister-in-law, Kathy Gurley, of Clayton, NC. In addition are his beloved grandchildren: Paul Francis Erba, Jr., presently in his last year of law school at Vanderbilt University; David Morris Erba at McDaniel College, in Westminster, MD; Samantha Ann Smith, a recent honor graduate of University of Southern California and now residing in Los Angeles; Jacob Reid Smith, a student at the University of Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was conducted at the Osborn Funeral Home in Shreveport, LA on Thursday, October 15, 2015.

Visitation will be held at McMikle Funeral Home Funeral in Charleston on Saturday, October 24, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour at 2:00 p.m. Rev. David Collum, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Charleston, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Lee Goodin, John W.L. Goodin, Scott Brink, Lindsay Goodin, Sam Austin, and John Waggener.

Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Hunter Byrd, Bruce Austin, Charles Brink, Albert V. Goodin, Bill McNeary and Retired General Jack Waggener.
