Obituary

ALVIN LUBY COPE, Age 89, a resident of Bertrand, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Bertrand Nursing Facility.

He was born June 14, 1925 in Madrid Bend, KY, to the late Lubie A. Cope and Hazel Lee Laster. He grew up in Charleston and graduated from Charleston High School. A US Navy veteran of WW II, he served in the Asiatic- Pacific Campaign aboard the USS California. He attended Murray State University graduating in 1950, where he played center on their football team. He was elected to the Ohio Valley All Conference his senior year and played with his team in the Tangerine Bowl in Florida. He received his Masters degree in Education from SEMO University. He coached and taught school, serving also as Charleston High School Principal for 33 years until his retirement in 1988. He then worked at the Mississippi County Times until 1998. He was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston.


He is survived by two daughters, Sheila (Ken) Doberenz of Hughson, CA and Luanne (Ed) Solansky of Ceres, CA; one grandson, Andrew Solansky, and one granddaughter, Carly Doberenz; one sister, Eula Limbaugh of Granada Hills, CA; one brother, Cliff Cope of Mayfield, KY; two nephews, Greg (Nancy) Laster, and Winford Laster; one niece, Mona Limbaugh; a sister in law, Reba Laster; and longtime friend, Fred DeField.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, in 2009; his son, Kyle, in 1997; one brother, Randall Laster; his step father, Winford Laster, and his step mother, Lillian Cope.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.,Thursday,November 6, 2014 at St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston with Father Patrick Nwokoye, serving as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston, under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
