Obituary

ARMINTHA VIRGINIA HAWS, age 101, died Thursday, August 1, 2013, at her home in Bertrand, just 28 days from being 102.

She was born August 29, 1911 in rural Charleston to the late George and Dolly Mosley Tyler. A lifetime resident of Mississippi and Scott Counties in Missouri, she was a charter member of the New Savannah Baptist Church, Blodgett, Mo and a current member of Southside Baptist Church in Charleston.

She had worked at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau and Shuffit Nursing Home in Sikeston. After retirement, she shared her beautiful crochet and handwork items with family and friends attending arts and crafts show in Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Her family totals 81 people who she could still call by name and remember each one with a gift on Christmas Day. She had traveled with children and grandchildren visiting many parts of the United States enjoying family visits, historical sites, and music festivals. She was called Mama, Grandma, my hero, my guardian angel, and dear friend.

.This 101 year old woman loved God, her family, her friends, country music, and Charleston Bluejay Basketball. When she was no longer able to attend games and tournaments she listened to radio broadcast of games and continued her support of the teams. Her support of church youth groups, scouts and school-related activities was an important part of her life and giving nature.

On September 14, 1929 she married George J. Haws who preceded her in death in January 1969.

Her survivors include six children, Dolly Ruth Brown of Crown Point, IN, Charles Haws of Killian, AL, Frances Hutson of Bertrand, Mary A. Martin of Bertrand, George R. Haws of Charleston, and Judy Whitson of Jonesboro, AR.

She was preceded in death one son, James Robert Haws; three daughters, Betty Ward, Patty Cummins, Teressa Haws; and one sister, Gertrude Wilson.

As a mother of 10, grandmother of 19, great-grandmother of 34 and great great grandmother of 18, her love, her generosity, her thoughtfulness, her work ethic, her sense of humor and love of life has been an inspiration through the generations.


Visitation will be held Friday, August 2, 2013, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the McMikle Funeral Home where funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at 2:00 pm. Jeremy Brown, her great grandson and pastor of Journey Church, of Medina, TN and Rev. Mike McKinney, pastor of Southside Baptist Church in Charleston, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Rich Haws, Matt Stobaugh, Kelly Butler, Josh McKinney,
Danny McKinney, Randy Fain, and Don Moxley
