Barbara Kay Burney Cook, age 61, of East Prairie, died Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Missouri.
She was born May 3, 1960, at Sikeston, to the late Billy Joe Burney and Etta May Adams Burney and was a lifelong resident of East Prairie. After graduating from East Prairie High School in 1979, Barbara went to work at the Brown Shoe Company in Charleston, Missouri, and then later became employed with the East Prairie R-2 School District as teacher's aide and often asked to be placed with students that had special needs. A talented vocalist, she sang for numerous funerals and weddings and for over nine years traveled with the southern gospel group, "The Gospel Travelers," with Mr. Junior Johnson. Barbara was a faithful and active member of the Powerhouse of God Church in East Prairie where she worked in the children's and youth ministries. "Barb" loved to care for others and one of her greatest joys was work the home of a family and help keep it clean and functional. She and her husband Keith shared many of those jobs together and considered it a great privilege to serve others.
On Sept. 20, 1980, she married William "Keith" Cook, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are her sons, Joshua David (Tamara Tidwell) Cook and Brian Keith (Angela Graumen) Cook, all of East Prairie; her two grandchildren, Skylar Kay and Hunter Lee; her brothers, Kevin (Kim) Burney and Lloyd Burney all of East Prairie and Frank (Regina) Burney of Mayfield, KY; also, a number of nieces, nephews and cousins survive.
In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, William "Billy" Burney; her sister, Patsy Ruth Burney; and sister-in-law, Sandy Owens.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2021, at the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, 2021 . Jimmy Allen will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery near East Prairie under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
Pallbearers will be: Chuck Elder, Dustin Allen, Jimmy Allen Jr., Roger Burney, Arnold Lay and Shawn Burney.
