BARBARA JEAN CARTER WHITEHEAD, age 64, a resident of Charleston, died on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at St Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born on June 25, 1947 in Carmi, IL to the late Lowell Ray and Reatha Delores Helsel Carter. Following graduation from Cairo (IL) High School, she lived in Florida for a few years before returning to Cairo in 1971. She worked as bookkeeper and office manager for Carter's Phillips 66 Station in Cairo until 1997, and then worked at Erlbacher Gear and Machine in Cape Girardeau until retiring in March 2009. In 1976 she moved to Missouri, living first in Wyatt until 1987 when she moved to Charleston. A member of Mighty Rivers Regional Worship Center in Cairo, she had attended Shawnee Community College and Southeast Missouri State University.
She was first married to Harold Bumpous who preceded her in death in 1996, then to Robert Griggs who preceded in death in 2001.
On December 16, 2000 she married John David Whitehead who survives of the home in Charleston.
Also surviving are one son, Rev. Robbie Griggs of St. Louis, one daughter, Lora L. Carter of Cape Girardeau; one step son, Jason Bumpous and one step daughter, Chrystal Bumpous both of Flat Rock, NC; one brother, Marshall Carter of La Center, KY; seven grandchildren, Amanda Carter , Napoleon Cornelius Jr., Brittnee Davis, Charles Griggs, Peter Griggs, George Griggs, and Kim Julian; four great grandchildren, Alex Jullian, Aiden Jullian, Emma Rose Jullian, and Jared Ray Allen Waters; and a very close friend, Miss Dorothy Coleman.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where the funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2011 with Rev. Larry Potts, pastor of Mighty Rivers Regional Worship Center in Cairo, IL and Father Glenn Eftink, pastor of St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston, officiating.
Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Rick Wolpers, Keith Mayfield, David Young, Larry Helsel, Luke Carter, and Daniel Carter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Burns, Buddy Mitchell, Craig Worthington, and Mike Phillips.
