BERTHA MAY HECKERT SWEET, age 88, a resident of Sikeston formerly of Bertrand, died Friday, August 26, 2011, at her home in Sikeston.
She was born March 12, 1923 in Bertrand to the late Doyle and Cecil Meeks Heckert. A graduate of the Diehlstadt High School, she lived in Bertrand most of her life. In 1944 she was employed by the US Post Office in Bertrand where in 1969 she was appointed Postmaster, a position she held until her retirement in 1980. Moving to Sikeston in 1983, she was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Sikeston.
On October 11, 1941 she married Edward Sweet who preceded her in death on December 16, 2004.
Surviving are one son and daughter in law, James and Donna Sweet of Kansas City, KS; one daughter and son in law, Sharron and Luther Smith of Miner; four grandchildren, Lisa (John) Spaulding of Benton, Brad (Page) Sweet of Olatha, KS, Jason (Candace) Sweet of Lansing, KS, and Wayne (Doris) Smith of Miner; eight great grandchildren, Emily Spaulding of Springfield, Katie Spaulding Cruz of Benton, Allyson, Joshua and Seth Sweet of Olathe, KS, Zachary and Kaleb Sweet of Lansing, KS, and Bart Smith of Sikeston; one great great grandson, Parker Cruz of Benton.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, William Heckert, Lawrence Heckert, and Edward Heckert.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 29, 2011 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Dan Faust, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Charleston, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
