BETTY LOU DORRIS GROVES, Age 76, a resident of Charleston, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at the Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Born January 22, 1935, at Steele, Missouri, to the late Archie J. and Lorraine Hope Summers Dorris, she had lived most of her life in Mississippi County where he was a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Charleston where she helped in the youth program and the church kitchen. A graduate of Diehlstadt High School, her first jobs were various cafés including the Watkins Café and several others before she was employed at the Goodwill Store in Sikeston until its closing and then was the bookkeeper for her husband's business, Groves Sanitation for a number of years. She then was employed at the Sands Café and later the Mueller Farm Market at Bertrand for a number of years until her retirement.
On June 25, 1955, she married Bennett Edward "Bill" Groves, Jr., who preceded her in death on December 20, 1980.
Surviving are: one son and daughter in law, Jamie and Debbie Groves of Oak Ridge, MO; two daughters and sons in law, Barbara and Donial McCann of Charleston and Pam and Claude Russell of Sikeston; one brother, Glynn Dorris of Bella Vista, AR; one sister Carolyn Torbet of Jackson, MO; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Gene Dorris and by one infant brother and one infant sister.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 15, 2011 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 16, 2011. Rev. Mike McKinney, pastor of the Southside Baptist Church of Charleston, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be: Lance Schlick, Josh Goodrich, Travis McCann, Tyler McCann, Michael Groves and Chris Russell.
