C.D. " BOB" HARRIS, age 80, a resident of Bertrand, died Thursday, December 4, 2014, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau,
He was born Jan. 1, 1934 in Tiptonville, TN to the late Will H. and Allie Howell Harris. Bob graduated from Diehlstadt High School in 1952 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War aboard the USS Pine Island, USS Salisbury Sound, USS Essex and the USS Bonnehome Richard. His Navy career took the family to California, Missouri, Florida, Mississippi, Wisconsin and Illinois. After assisting in the incorporation efforts of Bertrand, MO, Bob served as the first mayor from 1962-1963. Upon retiring from military service as a Chief Petty Officer First Class in 1975, Bob and Marlene returned to Bertrand and took over operations of McKinley Oil Co. changing the name to Harris Oil Co. In 1981 Bob received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Missouri Municipal League for outstanding leadership on behalf of his city and state. In 1992 the Harris's retired with the closing of Harris Oil Co.
On Dec. 22, 1955 he married Joan Marlene McKinley who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three children, C. Donald Harris, Jr. and wife Beverly of Cape Girardeau, Karen Harris Story and husband Stephen of Paducah, KY, and Mikki (Marla) Dorsey of Houston, TX, and five grandchildren, Rachel Harris of Sikeston, MO, Adam Dorsey of College Station, TX, Alexander Story of College Station, TX, Zachary and Kathryn Story, of Paducah, KY, and one brother, Frank Harris of Flint, MI.
He was preceded in death by five brothers Ivory Harris, Dalton Harris, Lymon Harris, James Harris and Junior Harris, and four sisters Mamie Fencher, Gladys Chandler, Luvie Harris and Mary Johnson. One sibling died as an infant.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 8, 2014, at the Charleston United Methodist Church from 11:30 a.m. until the Funeral hour at 1:00 p.m. Rev. David Collum, pastor, will officiate. Eulogists will be grandchildren, Rachel Harris, Alexander Story and Zachary Story.
Missouri Military Honor Guard will conduct Graveside Rites at the IOOF Cemetery. Interment will follow under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Alexander Story, Zachary Story, Michael Clark, Dale Harris, Billy Joe Harris, and Bill Harris. Honorary Pallbearers are Leslie Fox, Richard Griggs, and Sam Brown.
