CARL HENRY CATES, Age 66, a resident of Charleston, died Monday, January 18, 2016, at the Charleston Manor.
Born March 21, 1949, at Charleston, MO, to the late Henry Ervin and Violet Norene Simmerman Cates, he had lived in Charleston his entire life where he was a member of the Charleston Church of Christ. A registered EMT, he had served as the Director of the Mississippi County Ambulance Service, Mississippi County Civil Defense and had been employed with the City of Charleston as a fireman and dispatcher for a number of years. He later owned and operated C and L Trucking until ill health forced his retirement.
On August 17, 1968, he married LaDonna Sue Brown, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two sons and daughters in law, Carlen Todd and Tammy Cates of Leeton, MO and Cory Britton and Ginny Cates of Charleston; one daughter and son in law, Carla Sue and Terry Owens of Herrin, IL; two sisters, Violet Marie Cates and Naoma Fay Cates both of Charleston; his grandchildren, Bryant Steven Welsh, Lauren Sue Paz, Trey Cates, Spencer Cates, Jenni-Claire McMikle, Libby Cates and Trevor Cates; his bonus grandchildren, Josh McMikle, Nelson McMikle, Steve Sampson, Tommy Smetzer, Kayla Cunningham, Derrick Owens, Dalton McClendon and Lane McClendon; great grandchildren, Sky, Evan, Carly, Zoey, David, Zayden, Brooklyn and Aubreigh. Also, his special caregiver and Angel to us all, Shatara Ewing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Ervin Cates and one son in law, John Allen McMikle.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at noon, Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at the McMikle Funeral Home. Bill Bradley, longtime family friend and minister of the Church of Christ, will officiate. His son, Todd Cates, will offer the eulogy.
Private interment will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.
Pallbearers will be Denis Rapert, Jackie Hailey, William Groves, Jeff Johnson, Trevor Cates and Bryant Steven Welsh.
Honorary pallbearers will be Don Cates, Larry Powell and Vickie Litchford Ice.
The family wishes to especially thank the Charleston Manor and Staff for the wonderful care given to Carl, and special thank you to Linda Stokes, R.N. with the VNA Hospice, for everything she did to help make Carl comfortable and at peace while during his transition to Heaven
