CARMEN CATHERINE HINTON HICKS, Age 95, of Joliet, Ill., and formerly of Mississippi County, MO, died Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Fairview Care Center in Joliet.

Born September 15, 1918, in New Madrid County, MO, to the late William Marian and Ella May Givens Hinton, she had lived in the Dogwood Community a number of years until moving to Waverly, Missouri in 1952. She was employed with the Brown Shoe Company for 17 years and Hicks Pest Control and Tree Service in Waverly a number of years until her retirement. She moved to Joliet, IL in 2009 to be near her family. She was of Pentecostal Belief.

She was first married to Walter Layton, who preceded her in death on July 31, 1951. She then married D.H. Hicks, who also preceded her in death.

Survivors include: one son, Gary B. Layton of Joliet, IL; one sister, Jolene Hinton King of Clinton, MI; three grandchildren, Gara Garbe and Christopher Layton both of Plainfield, IL and Carol Pawlak of Joliet; also 8 great grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Andrew Thomas Hinton, Robert Francis Hinton, Jewell Earl Hinton, Paul Leslie Hinton, T.S. Hinton and John William "J.W." Hinton and four sisters, Lillian Oval Smithers, Elsie Marie Hinton, Leila Malinda Hinton and Imogene Marie Francis.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

Committal services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Dogwood Cemetery near East Prairie under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be: Steven Garbe, George Pawlak, Christopher Layton, Dan Hinton, Chauncey Wendell King, Jr., and Timothy Wayne King.
