Charles E. Dewitt, 86, died at his home in Miner Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019. He was born May 27, 1933 in Matthews to the late Hollis E. & Effie Marie (Ratliff) Dewitt.
A life-long resident of this area, he was a member of Shady Acres Church of Christ and a veteran of the U. S. Army during the Korean War; he had been the manager of E.C. Robinson Lumber Co. and had worked at Barton Lumber Co. in Sikeston; he then worked at Barton Salvage Stores in Paris and Tyler, Texas until his retirement. He loved hunting and fishing in his younger years and enjoyed playing pool with his grandson, Corey. It was always a competition of who could out cheat the other one and win the game.
He was married to Nancy Ellen (Watson), Aug. 18, 1956 in Hernando, Mississippi and she preceded him in death March 25, 2001. He then married Lillian (Pixley) Kelton, Nov. 24, 2002 in Sikeston and she survives.Also surviving are 1 daughter and son-in-law, Sandra & Troy Glaus of Chaffee; his grandson, Corey Bowles, and fiance Erica Welter of Chaffee; 2 step-grandsons, Marshall (Elyssa) Glaus and Alex Glaus of Scott City; and 2 step-great-grandchildren, Wesley Glaus and Maggie Glaus, also of Scott City; and two sisters, Joann Matthews of Sikeston and Mickey Rudisill of Morehouse and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Lillian's children, Regina Winders of South Port, North Carolina and David Kelton of Sikeston and David's son, Christopher Kelton, also of Sikeston. In addition to his first wife, Nancy, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Visitation will be at Blanchard Funeral Chapel from 5 until 8 pm Thursday; funeral services will be held in the Blanchard Chapel at 10:30 am, Friday, Nov. 1, with Keith Olbricht, minister of Shady Acres Church of Christ and Rev. Mitchell Jackson, pastor of Miner Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Corey Bowles, Marshall Glaus, Alex Glaus, Brad Dewitt, Jason Rudisiill and Mark Laden.
With his love of animals and feeding every stray cat in the neighborhood, the family requests memorial contributions be made in his honor to Safe Harbour Animal Sanctuary, 359 Cree Lane, Jackson, MO 63755
