CHARLES WILLIS MURPHY, Age 84, a resident of Bertrand, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at the Bertrand Nursing Center.
Born May 5, 1927 at Wyatt, Missouri, to the late Tandy Burton and Gertrude Marie Vowels Murphy, he had been employed in the service department with the Peoples Natural Gas Company in Waukegan, IL from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1952 after serving in Korea and Japan during the Korean Conflict. A member of the St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston, he was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and a member of the American Legion.
Surviving is one sister, Ellen Brumley of Sikeston; and a number of nieces and nephews, Denny Brumley, Kim Holland and Terri DeLong.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul V. Murphy, Frank Glenn Murphy, William "Bill" Murphy and James Orville Murphy and by one sister, Clara Marie Cope.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January, 4, 2012 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012, at the St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston. Father Glenn Eftink, pastor, will serve as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
