Obituary

David Eugene Hooper Hurley, 72, of Bertrand, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2022, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 14, 1950, at Bertrand, MO, to Harold Eugene "Gene" Hooper and Pauletta Hurley of Bertrand MO.

He had lived in Bertrand nearly all of his life and on November 22, 1969, he married the love of his life Darlene Terrell, who survives of the home.

In January 1970, he was inducted into the US Army and served as a radio repair specialist and film projectionist. Although he was not a "jumper", he was attached to the 101 st airborne division. He served one tour in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in October 1971.

He was mechanically gifted and a natural born problem solver, often repairing items for his family and friends without regard to compensation of any kind.

He worked for Waterfront Services in Cairo IL for many years before he opened Hurley's Mobile Home Parts in Bertrand, and eventually opened Hurley's This N That Market also in Bertrand. He expanded that business by opening Darlene's Café, where many people knew him as "Leroy the Cookie Man", a character he created to pass out cookies on Friday nights.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Bo, Tony, and Timothy (infant twin to Tony.) and one sister, Carrol Jean Bailey.

Besides his wife, he leaves behind his two children, Michael David Hurley (Christy) and Kimberly Darlene Hurley (Danny) both of Bertrand, seven grandchildren, Aaron, Arianna, Michaela, Gabe, Noah, Jaden, and Isaiah, and eight great-grandchildren. One brother, Harold Hooper of Bertrand, and two sisters Rebecca Williams (Jimmy) and Kelly Hooper Brown both of Paducah, KY; two half sisters, Sandy (Tommy) Woodruff of Bardwell, Ky. and Libby Hooper Merideth of Sikeston; also, a number of nieces and nephews.
