David R. Oliver, age 75, of East Prairie, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 14, 2024, after an extended illness. He was at his home in Dogwood with his loving family.
He was born on January 6, 1949, in Charleston, Missouri to the late Howard Dearmont Oliver and Margaret Rush Oliver.
He married Linda Hough on June 6, 1970. They had three daughters, Madeline (John Bob) Wilson, Emily (Michael) Allred and Summer (Brian) Cox; six grandchildren, Nicholes Allred, Maggie Grace Allred, John Robert Wilson, Mary Tyler Cox, Clara Cox and Benjamin Cox.
Additional survivors include his three brothers, Homer Oliver and wife, Rosemary, Joe Oliver and wife, Sandra, and Ted Oliver and wife, Shirley; one sister, Clyda Goodin; also, a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
David was a 1967 graduate of East Prairie High School and studied at Mississippi State University. In June 1969, he enlisted with the National Guard and served six years. His military qualification was an M16 Rifle Sharpshooter.
David farmed all his life. He farmed with his father and brothers for many years and later established Bur Oak Farms in 1987 with his brother and best friend, Joe. They retired together in 2015.
David was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors. In addition to hunting and fishing, David enjoyed collecting old antiques, marbles, looking for arrowheads and he loved his dogs.
Most of all, David loved being at home with the love of his life, Linda, and his daughters. Home is where his heart was the fullest and where he kept up the prettiest grass and a full garden of vegetables.
In addition to his parents, Dearmont and Margaret Oliver, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Carl Hough; sister, Rosalie Oliver LaPlant and his brother, Samuel Oliver.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Rev. Martin Lucas, pastor of the First Christian Church in East Prairie and Rev. Beth Allen, pastor of the Nelson Memorial United Methodist Church in East Prairie, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be made to Nelson Memorial United Methodist Church, 106 East Washington Street, East Prairie, MO 63845 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN, 38105.
