DEEMA LANE BOYD ATTEBERRY, a resident of Charleston, passed away peacefully at the age of 98, surrounded by her family on December 27, 2016 in St. Louis, Missouri.
She was born June 1, 1918 in Crosno, Missouri, to the late Ralph A. and Bertha Hicks Boyd, the middle child in a family of seven children.
In 1938, she married James M. Atteberry whose family owned and operated Atteberry Dairy in Charleston, Missouri. She was elected Treasurer of Mississippi County from 1966-1970 and later served as an active Red Cross volunteer. For over 20 years, she served as Secretary of the Consolidated Drainage District #1. A member of the Molly French Garden Club, she was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston and Mama Dee, as she was fondly known by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was loved by everyone who knew her. She was famous for her pocketbook rolls, caramels, and chocolate cream pie with meringue, her bridge-playing and gardening skills and stories about her children's and grandchildren's exploits. She loved to travel with her family who took her on trips to Hawaii, London, Cayman Islands, New York City, Nantucket, Hilton Head, Asheville, Destin, and Kentucky Lake.
Surviving are her son and daughter in law, Boyd and Pam Atteberry of Ballwin, MO; seven grandchildren, James Atteberry (Anne), Robert Atteberry (Heather), Heather Bowling (Andrew), DeeAnne Sjogren (Torbjorn), Lane Whitehead (Mark), Baxter Southern (Elizabeth), and Gordon Southern (Lindley); sixteen great-grandchildren Michael and Rebecca Atteberry, Abby, Kate, and Rachel Bowling, Sophia, Elsa, and Bjorn Sjogren, Coleman, Jana Lane, and Mary Frances Whitehead, Charlie B. and Mac Southern, A.W., Ella, and Susannah Southern; numerous nephews and nieces, relatives, and friends; all of whom adored her.
She is reunited in heaven with beloved husband James and daughter Jana Atteberry Southern; her parents; also one brother, James William "Jack" Boyd, and five sisters, Edna Miller, Mae B. Marshall, Louise Bischoff, Mabel Boyd, and Martha Jo Creed.
Visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church of Charleston, 301 S. Main Street, Charleston, MO on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from noon until the service hour at 2:00 p.m. Rev. George Nite, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Charleston, will officiate. DeeAnne Sjogren, her granddaughter, and James Atteberry, her grandson, will serve as Eulogists.
Pallbearers will be: James and Robert Atteberry, Baxter and Gordon Southern, Torbjorn Sjogren, Mark Whitehead, and Andrew Bowling.
Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston. Services are under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
A reception will follow at the Charleston Country Club, 201 N Country Club Lane, Charleston, MO.
