Dennis Edgar Hurley, 85, died Monday, April 6, 2026, at his home near Charleston, MO.
Dennis was born July 24,1940, at the family home in Charleston, MO, to Charles Edgar Hurley and Hazel Hunt Hurley. Growing up he worked on the family’s row crop and dairy farm where he developed a love for agriculture and the people within it. Dennis graduated from University of Missouri in Columbia in 1964 and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho. He joined the Army after one year of college, serving time in Ft Dix, NJ and Ft Leonard Wood, MO, then enlisted in the national guard when returning to college to finish his degree in Agriculture.
After graduation he took a job with Farmers Home Administration where he stayed until retirement in 1994. During his career he primarily served the people of New Madrid and Mississippi counties assisting agricultural loans and home loans. After retiring from the Farmers Home Administration, he joined the family business full-time and served as its CFO and Chairman of the Board.
Dennis lived with a passion for life. He never gave up on any endeavor that mattered to him—whether it was supporting the agricultural community, building a family business, farming the land he loved, or cherishing his family and friends. His determination and never-ending spirit touched everyone who knew him. He continued to actively farm the family farm until 2018.
His commitment to finishing what he started exemplified the spirit that guided his entire life. In 1986, Dennis married Ida McTigue Hurley, and together they founded Hurley & Associates Agri-Marketing Centers.
After Ida’s passing in 2022, Dennis found renewed love in 2023 when he married his college sweetheart, Marilyn Henley Barkley. Marilyn survives of the home.
Dennis was a lifelong member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Dennis found strength in his faith. In his spare time, he enjoyed farming, reading, and woodworking—pursuits that reflected his hands-on approach to life and his appreciation for creating things of value.
In addition to his wife, Dennis is survived by his two sons, David (Vicki) Hurley of Cape Girardeau, MO and Trent (Amanda) Hurley of Charleston, MO. He treasured his grandchildren, Lucas (Sophia) Hurley, Gabe (Lauren)Hurley, Victoria Hurley, Emma Hurley and Ethan Hurley. Dennis had three younger brothers: Derris (Jan) Hurley of Albany OR, Mike Hurley of Terry, MS and Mark (Gerri) Hurley of Booneville MS. He was proud of his nephews and his niece and enjoyed visiting with his many cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his second wife, Ida McTigue Hurley, his daughter, Cynthia and his sister-in-law, Kathy Hurley.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at noon, Friday, April 10, 2026, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Rev. Tim Miller will officiate.
