Obituary

Edna Faye Powell Elliott of Charleston achieved eternal rest on Monday, November 4, 2024, at Sikeston, Missouri.

She was born in the family home on November 10, 1940, in rural Bertrand, Missouri to Jack Powell and Roberta "Bobbie" Bradley Powell.  When Faye was eight years of age, the family moved to the town of Bertrand.  She graduated from Charleston High School in 1958 and completed two years of business training at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

On Aril 15, 1961 she married George Robert Elliott.  They became the proud parents of two daughters - Kathy Elliott Slaten and Cecelie Elliott Pike.  The family lived in Bertrand until 1969 when they moved to Charleston.

Faye was quite the businesswoman, being employed through the years as a receptionist at Ferguson Clinic, secretary to the Charleston City Manager, Charleston City Clerk and City Collector, bookkeeper at the Charleston Host House, and secretary to Doctor Gregorio Rodriguez.  In 1974, she was elected Mississippi County Treasurer and served in that capacity for 12 years.  She was then elected Mississippi County Collector and served until her retirement in 2011, having worked for 36 years in the county courthouse.  Faye also kept books for Elliott Tire Center, her husband's business, during this time.

Among her many lifetime achievements, Faye was a dedicated member of the Charleston United Methodist Church Bell Choir (the "Ding-a-lings") and she assisted her church as Memorial Chairman.  She dutifully served as a board member of the Charleston Nutrition Center and for many years delivered meals.  Faye also was a member of the Business Professional Women.  One of her cherished times was coaching Charleston Girls summer softball for many years.

Faye was a proud member of the L.O.L.'s – a ladies' morning coffee club which met every weekday for over 60 years.  Faye was the "baby" of the group, chauffeuring the others for years.  The only surviving member of the group is Mary Lela Crenshaw Hough.  Members of the group were Wilma "Bill" Heckman, Becky Story, Wilda DeField, Dorothy DeField, Lois Hurley, Louise Sutherland, Norma Jean "Tee" Marshall, Mary Hough & Faye.  She was a skilled bowler and was a league player.  For many years, Faye gave advent calendars to the children in her family and those of her friends.  Later, it became a treat to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of her family and friends.

Mrs. Elliott is survived by her daughter, Kathy Elliott Slaten, and by her grandchildren whom she adored, Maren Slaten of St. Louis, Nicole Pike of Jackson, Missouri, and Eli Pike of Ridgeland, South Carolina.  She also leaves her sister, Vera Powell Shultz, and brother, Calvin Powell, both of St. Louis and several beloved nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Arlen Powell, her husband George and by her daughter, Cecelie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2024, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston.  Reverend Scott Moon, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Charleston, will officiate.

A musical tribute by the Sam and Jane Goodin Memorial Handell Choir of the United Methodist Church of Charleston will be performed during a worship service at a later date.

It was Faye's wish that instead of flowers and gifts to her family, memorials be directed alternately to "someone in need."  Faye was truly grateful for all prayers, beautiful cards, flowers and visits.  She lived knowing she was loved by many.

The family and Faye would like to also acknowledge the wonderful care she received while at the Charleston Manor and Clearview Nursing Facility.  Also, the sincerest thanks to Crown Hospice & Pastor Scott Moon for absolutely the most tender love and care throughout Faye's journey home.

McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston is in charge of arrangements.
