On June 21, 1936 she became the bride of Benjamin Grinstead Brewer, also of Charleston, and he preceded her in death on May 18, 1989.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 53 years, her brother George U. Shelby Jr., and her sisters, Evelyn Lowrey and Mayme Dernoncourt.

She is survived by her children, Dave (Virginia) Brewer of Charleston; Dr. Nelson (Karol Anne) Brewer of Eatonton, Georgia; Bill (Janice) Brewer of East Prairie; Francie Brunt of Atlanta, Georgia and Helen (Mike) Miltenberger of Danville, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Nancy Thurmond of Charleston.
