Obituary

George Richard Haws, of Charleston, passed away February 19, 2022.  He was born at home in Blodgett, MO, on January 30, 1944 to George Jacob and Armintha Tyler Haws.  George Richard was the 8 th of 10 children.  He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother James, and sisters Patty Cummins, Theresa Haws, Betty Ward, and Dolly Ruth Brown.

George is survived by the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Patricia R Masters Haws; daughters Beth and Pam both of Charleston; son Rich and his wife Jessica of Jackson; and two grandsons Aaron and Blake.  His grandsons were the absolute joy of his heart.  He is also survived by the brother Charles Haws (Evelyn) of Alabama and sisters Francis Hutson of Bertrand, Mary Ann Martin (Jerry) of Bertrand, and Judy Whitson of Arkansas.  George has almost too many nieces and nephews to count stretching from Florida to Illinois, Virginia to California, and all in between.  During his last few days, he repeatedly expressed his love for his family in its entirety.

George Richard farmed, worked in the steel mills in Indiana, worked construction with his brother-in-law Don Cummins, and then had his own construction company.  It was not until he started "picking" that he found his work passion for antiques.  He loved running the country roads looking for old houses, barns, and sheds to dig through.  Along the way he stopped and every flea market and yard sale.  He never tired of looking for a great deal.  Though he closed the business a couple of years ago, he still loved to tell stories of some of his greatest finds, the deals he struck, and the selling of the item.  Dealers, auctioneers, and buyers were not just colleagues.  They became very good friends.  Even those who would intentionally try to bid him up on an item (Remember and insert his grin here).

George also had a passion for sports.  He could fish for hours even without catching.  He played on a men's fast pitch softball league (pitcher).  George also coached baseball (Pee Wee, Little League, and Babe Ruth) in both Bertrand and Charleston.  He loved coaching baseball and all of the boys he got to coach.  He also enjoyed seeing them as grown men around town or at his yearly yard sale.

George quietly donated money, toys, and time to multiple organizations such as the Bertrand Volunteer Fire Department, St. Jude, Shriners, Kiwanis , and many more.  Sometimes people would come to the house to sell him something because they needed the money.  He would often pay more than it's worth because he knew the person was in need.

Family and friends will assemble at the McMikle Funeral Home, at 10:40 a.m., Saturday, February 26, 2022, for a procession to the IOOF Cemetery in Charleston. Graveside services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at IOOF Cemetery.

Interment will follow under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
