GEORGE ELLIOTT SIMMONS SR., age 85, a resident of Sikeston and formerly of Charleston, died Sunday, August 25, 2013 at the Missouri Veteran's Home in Cape Girardeau.
Born December 8, 1927 in Charleston to the late Elza Minor and Ethel Hurley Simmons, he had lived in Southeast Missouri his entire life. Following his graduation from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, he served in the US Army during the Korean conflict in counter intelligence. After his discharge, he was employed with International Harvester servicing southeast Missouri until becoming a dealer for Case IH in southeast Missouri and Illinois. Leaving Case IH in 1991, he became a real estate broker and operated Simmons Brokerage until 2012. In addition to being active in community affairs and honored with recognition as Charleston's Man of the Year, he was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board and various committees.
On December 28, 1991, he married Sue Shepard who survives in Sikeston.
He is also survived by three children, Julie Elizabeth (Scott) Lyon of Atlanta, GA, George Elliott Simmons Jr. of Marietta, GA, and Jeffery Allen (Bonnie) Schmelzer of Muscatine, IA; one brother, Harold (Connie) Simmons of Milwaukee, WI; four grandchildren, George Lyon and Margaret Lyon of Atlanta, GA and Noah (Emily) Schmelzer of Ankeny, IA and Evan Schmelzer of Ames, IA; also one great grandson, Gabe Schmelzer of Ankeny, IA.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Charleston from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the United Methodist Church with Rev. David R. Collum, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating.
Missouri Military Honor Guard will
conduct graveside rites at the IOOF Cemetery.
Interment will follow under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Charles "Bud" Simmons, Michael Simmons, Bradley Simmons, Patrick Simmons, Hense Winchester, Mike Couch, Jim Cullison, and Reginald Young.
