HAZEL HUNT HURLEY, Age 96, a resident of Charleston, died Friday, August 29, 2014, at the Charleston Manor.
Born July 14, 1918, in Gideon, MO, to the late Charley Bennett and Nellie Mae Brackney Hunt, her mother died when she was three months old, and she and her sister were raised by their maternal grandparents in the Morehouse area. The family eventually moved to the Whiting Community in Mississippi County where she finished high school at East Prairie in 1937. She took her teachers exam and taught at the Mounds School in rural Mississippi County. The School was washed away in the flood of 1937 but was rebuilt and she taught all eight grades with 50 children enrolled. For 71 years she had been a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church near Charleston.
On August 12, 1939, she was married Charles Edgar Hurley and they moved to the family farm west of Charleston where she lived until moving to the Charleston Manor in February of 2014. Her husband preceded her in death on May 31, 1981.
Surviving are four sons, Dennis(Ida) Hurley of Charleston; Michael (Kathy) Hurley of Terry, MS; Derris (Jan) Hurley of Albany, OR; and Mark (Gerrie) Hurley of Boonville, MS; six grandchildren, David (Vicki) Hurley of Cape Girardeau; Trent (Amanda) Hurley of Charleston; Kevin Hurley of Fayetteville, AR; Jeremy (Allison) Hurley of Jackson, MS; Amy (Lorenzo) Bennett of Madison, MS and Ben Hurley of Silver Spring, MD; also nine great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Hunt Bender and her granddaughter, Cynthia Ann Hurley.
Visitation will be from noon until the funeral hour at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Ted Wimberley, pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church near Charleston, will officiate.
Interment will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.
Pallbearers will be David Hurley, Trent Hurley, Kevin Hurley, Jeremy Hurley, Ben Hurley and Lucas Hurley.
