Obituary

HOYT GENE BARNES, Age 67, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at his home in rural Charleston.

He was born August 31, 1943, in San Francisco, CA to the late Dan Pat and Robbie Lydia Russell Barnes and had attended Arkansas State University at Russellville, Arkansas. Moving to Mississippi County in 1975 he was actively engaged in the family farm operation, Barnes and Layton Farms. As a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church near Charleston he served as deacon and former Sunday School Director. In 1989 he became a member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston where he had served as Sunday School Director, and was currently serving as a deacon. Since 1978 he has been a member of the Gideon's International Bible Association. A former member of the University of Missouri Extension Council, he had served as a member and former president on the Board of Directors for River Bend Ag, Delta Growers Association, and the Mississippi County Farm Bureau. He was currently serving as vice president of the Board of Directors for Mississippi County Savings and Loan.

On December 31, 1965, he married Judith Ann O'Neal, who survives of the home.

Also surviving are: one daughter and son in law, April Lynn and David L. Whitworth of Jackson; one sister Wilma Dean Oliver of Modesto, CA; two grandsons, Landon Barnes Whitworth and Logan Blaine Whitworth both of Jackson.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 24, 2010 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 25, 2010. Rev. Michael Brewer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Charleston and Rev. Ted Wimberley, pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church of Charleston, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be: Ray Presson, Roy Presson, Albert Goodin, Leslie Collier, Eddie Barnhill and Lanie Black.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the deacons of the First Baptist Church of Charleston.
