Obituary

Ida Virginia McTigue Hurley, age 80, died Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at the Bertrand Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Ida was born February 4, 1942, at Tuckerman, AR, to the late Waymon Audie "W.A." McTigue and Ollie May Helms McTigue and grew up in Mississippi County where she lived her entire life.

Ida was the founder and a principal in Hurley & Associates Agri-Marketing Centers, a firm specializing in farm marketing, financial analysis and farm management. Today the business has grown to nine office locations serving producers in 18 states stretching from Canada to the Gulf Coast. The seed that eventually grew into Hurley and Associates was planted in 1976. This is the year Ida Hurley began bookkeeping for several local farmers. She began by shipping grain via rail for a farmer who had purchased a small elevator site on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Soon thereafter Ida was asked by a large farm management company located in Texas to assist in accounting and later in merchandising grain for their multi-state operation. Other local farmers then organized and asked her to begin merchandising their grain. By the year 1981, Ida was merchandising for farmers representing several thousand acres of land.

Prior to 1976, she spent thirteen years in law, doing work similar to that of a para legal. She was probate-magistrate clerk for Mississippi County, Missouri for one year. Ida has taken numerous classes, both in the private sector and state universities, on marketing and financial analysis.

Ida served on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Agricultural Consultants and is a Certified Agricultural Consultant.  She served as the first woman president of that organization in 1998/99. Ida has since received two distinguished service awards, and an award for her vision for agriculture from that Society and a similar award from the University of Missouri Extension Service.

Over the years, Ida taught a marketing class at the Ferguson Institute, a four-year management course for farmers held in conjunction with the University of Tulsa. In addition, she taught agriculture producer marketing and management workshops at the University of Oklahoma, Kansas State, Virginia Tech, and Clemson University in South Carolina. She has also done workshops for the University of Arkansas at Jonesboro, and for the American Soybean Association.

Her goal for Hurley & Associates was to provide educational opportunities along with sound financial risk management and marketing strategies to every farmer.

Ida enjoyed her time with her family and working in her church.  She was a longtime member of the New Bethel Baptist Church where she served as music director and was a former member of the Katherine Boone Music Club in Charleston.

On August 20, 1963, she married Fred Wayne "Freddie" Phillips who preceded her in death on April 16, 1983.

On October 3, 1986, she the married Dennis Hurley, who survives of the home.

Also surviving are her stepsons, David (Vicki) Hurley of Cape Girardeau and Trent (Amanda) Hurley of Charleston; grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, Victoria, Lucas and Gabe; her sister, Ozella McTigue Scott of Charleston, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her first husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Marshall Fremont McTigue and her sister, Syvella McTigue Henson.

The family will receive friends from noon until the funeral hour at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 8, 2022, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.  Rev. Randy Thomas will officiate.
