JAMES BRACKSTON "BUD" SMALL JR., 80, passed away surrounded by his family, Sunday, September 24, 2017, at his home in Charleston.
Born on July 30, 1937 in Wyatt, he was the son of J.B. and Ethel Daniel Small Sr. He spent a great deal of his childhood with his beloved grandparents C.E. and Bessie Small. He attended elementary school in Wyatt and graduated from Charleston High School in 1956.
After his father's death in 1962 he owned and operated Small Lumber Company first in Wyatt, and upon forming a partnership with his sons, Jamie and Jeff, they relocated to Charleston in 1998. Bud was an avid Bluejays football fan and many remember him in the press box filming the teams for the coaches.
A civic-minded man, Bud served as the Police Judge in Wyatt for many years. He was also a member of the Wyatt Jaycees, Wyatt Volunteer Fire Department, and served on the zoning board for the City of Charleston.
On March 10, 1957, he married Harriett Goodin who resides in the home.
Also surviving are his three children James B. (Brenda) Small and Jeffrey (Kim) Small all of Charleston, and Janice (Mike) Kueker of Red Bud, IL; two grandsons Dr. James B (Sydney). Small IV and Garrison (Amy) Eastman; four granddaughters Ginnifer (Matt) Stevens, Gretchen Eastman, Catherine Small, and Lillian Small; and seven great-grandchildren Abby, Bailey, Miley, Aaron, James, Brackston and Aubrey.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Nell Small Cange.
Bud leaves a legacy of family values, kindness, fairness, and honesty. His grandsons and great-grandsons have all been named for him.
Visitation in honor of "Daddy Bud" will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Charleston from 10:00 am until the Memorial Service at 12:00 pm (Noon). Rev. George Nite, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Charleston, and Rev. DeWayne Kirkpatrick, pastor of the First General Baptist Church of Diehlstadt, will officiate. Services are under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Shriners Hospital for Children, 4400 Clayton Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63110.
