James E.
Satterfield
February 21, 1942 – June 1, 2025
James E. Satterfield
James E. Satterfield, a well-respected figure in Sikeston, Missouri, who was a leader in the towing industry as well as a revered stock car driver, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, at Mercy Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Born in 1942 in Russellville, Arkansas, James moved with his family to Sikeston just six months later—a town that would become the backdrop for his lifelong commitment to service and community. He graduated from Sikeston High School in 1960. He later served in the Missouri National Guard.
James's journey into the towing world began in his teenage years when he worked part-time dispatching calls at Dace Towing, where his father, Wade Satterfield, was employed. In 1959, Wade established Wade's Body Shop, offering 24-hour towing services. James immersed himself in the business, learning the ropes through hands-on experience and embracing his father's philosophy: "do things right, no shortcuts." In 1965, James ventured out on his own, opening a mechanic and body shop in Grant City, Missouri. Two years later, he returned to Sikeston, purchasing a larger facility and founding Satterfield Wrecker Service. Over the next six decades, James personally handled over 150,000 wrecker calls, earning a reputation for reliability and excellence. Beyond his professional achievements, James was deeply committed to his community. He frequently provided pro bono towing services to those in need and was a steadfast supporter of local events. For over 20 years, he donated his services to the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, a week-long event attended by thousands, with proceeds benefiting charities like the American Red Cross, United Way, and the YMCA. His generosity extended to sponsoring fundraisers for organizations such as the Shriner's Hospital in St. Louis, St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, and donating vehicles for disaster relief efforts, including aid for Hurricane Katrina victims. James's dedication to safety led him to advocate for Missouri's seat belt law, and he often engaged with youth to highlight the dangers of reckless driving. His career was marked by resilience, from enduring harsh weather conditions to ensuring timely assistance for those in distress. In 2007, James sold Satterfield Wrecker Service to Greg Copeland, to whom he was a mentor and father figure. James remained involved in the business, offering guidance and support as Greg continued the legacy James had built. His influence extended beyond the workplace, leaving a lasting personal impact on those he mentored. In 2012, James was inducted into the International Towing Hall of Fame.
James is survived by his beloved daughters, Jami Satterfield Francescon (husband John Francescon and mother the late Dixie Byrd Satterfield}; and Jana Sullivan (mother Linda Sullivan); his granddaughter, Ella Jane Francescon, daughter of Jami; and grandchildren Haley, Hannah, and Jonah, children of Jana; and his great-grandchildren Ashlynn, Avery, and Wade. James is also survived by stepsons Rob Griffin and Tod Griffin and their children; and siblings Lanny Satterfield of Kelso, Missouri, and Wanda Angle of Sikeston. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. James was preceded in death by his father, Wade Satterfield, mother, Ella Mae Ford Satterfield and his siblings Randy and Glenda Satterfield.
