Jamie Small

James Brackston “Jamie” Small, III, age 68, of Charleston, MO., died Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO surrounded by his wife, Brenda, daughter, Catherine, son, JB, and his daughter-in-law, Sydney. Then to be woken up by his mother, father, brother and special pups Cali and Lola Bell in heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Born on March 31, 1958, at Sikeston, Missouri, he was the son of James B. "Bud" Small, Jr. and Harriett Goodin Small. He grew up in Wyatt, MO with his younger sister, Janice and brother, Jeffery. He was the paternal grandson of James B. Small, Sr. and Ethel Daniel Small and maternal grandson of Oliver F. Goodin and Lucille Feezor Goodin Sprague.

He graduated from Charleston High School where he played football and wrestled just like his father and brother. After high school he attended and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1980 where he met the love of his life, Brenda Jean Lathum Small.

Following graduation, Jamie joined his family’s business, Small Lumber Company, where he dedicated his career. In 2023, he became the sole owner, proudly continuing the family legacy.

Jamie and Brenda built a life centered on faith, family, and love. He married Brenda on September 12, 1981, in Canalou, MO. On November 2, 1989, they welcomed the birth of their first child, James Brackston Small IV (JB) whom he loved dearly. On April 27, 1995, they welcomed the birth of their second child, Catherine Elizabeth Small whom they adored. Nothing brought Jamie greater joy than being their father.

To those who knew him family was the most important thing to Jamie. His love was a steady and strong love. It didn’t matter what time of day or night it was Jamie would be there. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and loyal friend. Jamie was a steady source of wisdom, strength, kindness, and unwavering love.

To his daughter, Catherine, he was more than a father, he was her rock, her safe place, and one of her greatest blessings.

To his son, JB, he was both a loving father and a role model, taking immense pride in the man JB became and always being proud to call him his son.

Jamie found tremendous joy in being “Papa” to his granddaughters, Nova, Elizabeth (“Ellie”), and Genevieve (“Vivi”), each of whom held a special place in his heart.

He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and who will carry his memory in their hearts every day. Though his absence leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy of love, strength, and devotion will continue to live on through those who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his father, Bud, mother, Harriett, and brother, Jeff. Whom welcomed him in heaven.

He is survived by his beautiful wife, Brenda. Children, Catherine and JB. His favorite daughter-in-law, Sydney. Wonderful granddaughters: Nova, Elizabeth (Ellie), and Genevieve (Vivi). His dog Petie who was like his shadow.

His younger sister whom he loved dearly Janice (Mike) Kueker of Red Bud, IL.

He leaves behind a wonderful crew of nieces and nephews: Ginnifer B. (Matthew) Stevens of Sikeston, Garrison (Amy) Eastman of Charleston, Gretchen (Clayton) Garner of Charleston, and Lilly (Doug Cook) Small of St Louis. As well as grandnieces and nephews Bailey Eastman, James Stevens, Aaron Jones, Brackston Stevens (Brack), Aubrie Eastman, Asher Eastman and Clayre Garner.

From his family and friends, his sense of humor and way to provide knowledge and love will forever be missed. He lived a life full of joy, and love. Jamie touched countless lives through his generosity, his compassion, and his ability to make those around him feel loved. His family was always at the center of his life, and the memories he created with them will be cherished forever.

Dad thank you for being my rock. I will always love you and will miss you until the day I see you again.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until the funeral hour at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, MO. Rev. Joe Mooney, pastor of First Christian Church of Charleston, will officiate.

Interment will be private.
