He was born February 2, 1941, in the Lusk Chapel Community in rural Scott County, MO to the late Alfred Herbert Martin and Helen Virginia Presson Martin. Jerry grew up on the family farm, sharing many memories with his brothers, Mike and Don Martin, and his sister, Brenda Martin. Jerry was a 1958 graduate of Kelly High School.
On June 7, 1959, he married Mary Anna Haws. They would spend the next 65 years creating a beautiful life and family together.
