James Gottfred (Jim) Anderson, 80, a resident of East Prairie, died Saturday, September 7, 2013 at his home. He was the former editor and co-owner with his wife of The Enterprise-Courier in Charleston and the East Prairie Eagle newspapers.
He was born in Glendale, CA on October 16, 1932, son of the late Gottfred Helmer Anderson and the late Pearl Mae (Jensen) Anderson.
After graduating from Glendale High School, Jim joined the Navy where he served on the Admirals Flagship in the Mediterranean. After four years in the Navy he left the Navy and went to the University of California Berkeley. He then transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism.
On October 15, 1966 he was married to Elizabeth (Liz) G. Wallhausen in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they both worked as reporters at the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Jim and Liz lived in the Sacramento, California, area from 1968 to 1979, where Jim had accepted a position with the Sacramento Bee.
In 1979 he and Liz were asked, and accepted, an offer to move back to work at the East Prairie Eagle, while Liz worked at the Charleston Enterprise-Courier. In 1984, he and his wife purchased the two newspapers and he edited the Enterprise-Courier until 2009.
The East Prairie Eagle was awarded Best Special Section by the Missouri Press Association for his and his wife's work on a special section about the tornado that went through East Prairie in 1984.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a son, Eric Christian Anderson.
He is survived by one daughter Kellie (Damon) Bone of East Prairie; a sister, Sharon (Tom) Miller of La Crescenta, CA; four grandchildren Joshua Shane and Dalton James Golightly, Mary Elizabeth Irene Bone and Damon Lee Bone III all of East Prairie ; three step-grandchildren, Mike Berry of Jackson, MO; Michelle (Justin) Crain of Villa Ridge, IL; and Kayla Bone of Tamms, IL; four step great grandchildren Macey Crain, Baylea Crain, Deshon Bailey and Deshonee Bailey; one nephew, Bill (Irma) Miller of Altadena, CA; three nieces, Jodie (Gary) Atkinson of Kihei, Hawaii; Krista (Alex) Hardin of Simi Valley, CA; and Heather (Rick) Peterson of La Crescenta, CA.
Private services will be held.
