JAMES A. HARVEY, age 76, a resident of Charleston died Friday, September 16, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born January 22, 1935 in Charleston to the late Joe and Bertha Thompson Harvey. Following his graduation from Charleston High School, he completed training as a broadcaster in Memphis, TN. In 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Purdue University in between his service in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. In 1977 he received an honorable discharge as a disabled veteran following an injury. He returned to Charleston where he opened Harvey Electrical Contracting and Satellite Company, and taught Electronics at Shawnee Community College and Tamm's Vocational School for a number of years until accepting a position with the Missouri Department of Transportation in 1986. He patented a medical device purchased by Hollister Inc. for Ostomy and Stoma Care; designed a Loop Detector Tester which is used by Allied Signal Company; and also was holder of patents for several electrical devices. He retired from MoDot in 1996 and then closed his Electrical Contracting and Satellite Company in 1997. He was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church and Charleston Lions Club.
In 1985 he married Sandy Ashley Stanley who survives of the home.
Also surviving are six children, Connie (Ben) Leubbert of Columbia, James A. (Leslie) Harvey II of Springfield, Jamie Lynn (Michael) Sterling of Charleston, Richard Dale (Nancy) Stanley II of Pittsburg, PA, Rodney (Heather) Stanley of St. Louis, and Lt. Colonel Jami Stanley (Doug) Shawley of Potomac, MD; one sister and brother in law, Carla Jo and Bill Wills of Cape Girardeau; David and Sandy Harvey of Oklahoma City, OK; also 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Harvey.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2011, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 with Rev. Ted Wimberley, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jerimy Morehead, Lt. Col. Terry Crass, Dale Glenn, Max Carlyle, Donnie Sams, and Buddy Reeves.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dennis Quertermous, Fred DeField, Don McClain, Byron McDowell, Bill Brown, and Ted Medlock.
