JO ELMA HOUSTON CARTER, Age 92, a resident of Charleston, died Sunday, January 21, 2018, at the Charleston Manor.
Born April 7, 1925, at Bertrand, MO, to the late Joseph W. Houston and Gracie L. Skaggs Houston, she had lived in Charleston most of her life where she was a member of the First Baptist Church. Having worked as a floor supervisor at Snowers in Cairo, IL a number of years, she had also owned and operated Jo's Beauty Bar and was the co-owner of Mildred Gates in Cairo. She was member of the Cairo B.P.W.
In 1947, she married Edwin Carter, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter and son in law, Janis Rae (Don) Merideth of Charleston; one grandson and granddaughter in law, Jody Lee (Jennifer) Merideth; one brother, Dr. Martin Ray Houston of Bowling Green, KY; one sister, Zella Houston Brooks of Charleston; two great grandchildren, Annabel Reagan Merideth and Hudson Groves Merideth.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Richard Houston and two sisters, Lucille Houston
Chambliss and Juanita Houston Hardiek.
Private burial was at the Oak Grove Cemetery near Charleston.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.
