JOAN ROLWING
Joan Bishop Rolwing of Charleston died Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Delta South Skilled Nursing Center in Sikeston.
Joan was born May 17, 1931, in Beloit, Wis., the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Fleet Bishop. She moved in 1940 with her family to Sikeston where she became a proud Red Pepper and cheerleader who 75 years later could still sing the words of all the pep songs. She worked in Jefferson City for a time and later at the Sikeston Daily Standard when in 1956 she married Patrick Rolwing of Charleston, who preceded her in death in 2007. In addition to being a homemaker and raising her children, Joan was an accomplished amateur painter and was involved through the years in hosting and organizing numerous local charity events including American Cancer Society fundraisers, as a founding member of the local chapter of the Council of Catholic Women and with other church activities, and with the Mississippi County Historical Society of which she was past president. She was recognized in 2000 for her community work when she was named Charleston Woman of the Year by the Charleston Lions Club.
In addition to her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by sisters Avis (Jim) Martin of Bethalto, Ill., and Mary (Dayton) Lasater of Sikeston.
She is survived by four children: Tim (Holly) Rolwing of Charleston, Patricia (Walter) Crenshaw of LaGrange, Tenn., Robert Rolwing of Memphis, and Susan (Chris) Dugan of Charleston. She also had two granddaughters, Emily (Scott) Crawford of Memphis and Rebecca (Leyton) Proctor of Midland, Tex., and four great-grandchildren: Porter Crawford, Grace Crawford, Wesley Proctor, and Warren Proctor, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. until time for the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., at St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston. Father David Dohogne, pastor, will serve as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Texas Bend Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
Casket bearers will be Jim Rolwing, Scott Crawford, Leyton Proctor, Scott Dugan, Ben Martin and Mike Marshall.
In lieu of flowers, plants and gift items, the family kindly requests memorials be made to St. Henry Catholic Church (or School), 304 Court Street, Charleston, MO, 63834 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38015.
The family would particularly like to thank the staff at Delta South for their care during Joan's residence there, and Fr. Dohogne for his many pastoral visits.
