Obituary

DR. JOHN T. BIRD, JR.

Former Charleston resident. Dr. John T. Bird, Jr., was a kind man. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
John passed away at 2:10 am on February 10, 2009. He had been diagnosed with pneumonia and lung cancer. He lived 89 years on his own, spent 3 weeks in the hospital.

John was born on July 20, 1919. His father was John Thomas Bird, his mother was Edith Naomi Webb Bird, and his sister was Martha Webb Bird. The family resided at Birds Point, MO, on land owned by the Bird family since before the Louisiana Purchase (1803). John recently donated the Birds Point land where the Lewis and Clark expedition first crossed the Mississippi River to the Louisiana Purchase. The state of Missouri has placed a historical marker. Later the family moved to Charleston, MO.

John graduated from Washington University School of Dentistry in 1943. In 1944, he was commissioned as a dentist into the U.S. Army Air Force. He served in the United States, Africa, Dakar, Senegal, and Paris and was honorably discharged in 1946.

In 1947, Dr. Bird joined the faculty of the Washington University School of Dentistry. He was a pioneer in endodontics (root canals) and became a professor with tenure. He became Dean in 1967 until his retirement in 1976. Having been predeceased by his mother and sister, (and later his father), he moved to California to be near a friend from dental school days, Dr. Kent E. Davis, and was 'adopted' into the Davis family.

John was an active member of the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church, volunteered for Project Second C
hance, and the Contra Costa Service Center, 185 Mayhew, Walnut Creek, CA.

John was a true friend. He was kind and generous. He enriched the lives of all who knew him. Dr. Davis, his family, including John's two god-daughters, Monica Fliehmann and Janeen Milliken, are deeply grateful for the role that he played in their lives.

John is survived by the Davis family and several first cousins.

Graveside Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. (Noon), Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Charleston, MO. Rev. Dan Faust, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Charleston, will officiate.
