JOHN LESLIE DAVIS, age 88, of Sikeston, MO, died Friday, April 18, 2025, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born March 21, 1937, at Morehouse, MO, to the late Leonard A. Davis and Helen Margaret Murrie Davis Owings, he was a 1955 graduate of Morehouse Schools. Immediately following his high school graduation, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his time in the service, he returned to Sikeston where he began his life with his wife and this coming August they would have been married for 70 years. Together they raised their family.
John was no stranger to hard work. He began as a young man working at the Sikeston Power Plant when it was new in its formation and remained there for 20 years. He would later work with Flaire Ferrell Excavating and MoDOT. John was engaged in farming all of his life and also owned and operated Davis Marble Works until its closing. He had attended the Murray Lane Baptist Church and for a number of years served as a little league baseball coach and was a member of the Sikeston Eagles Club.
On August 23, 1955, he married Greta Sue Humphrey, and she survives of the home.
Also surviving are his children, Cynthia Jane Davis-Groves, James A. (Marsha) Davis and Timothy Lee (Janet) Davis; his grandchildren, Brandon Brown, Candace Brown, Adam Lee Davis, Eric Lee Davis, Jason Davis and Lindsey Bauer; a number of great grandchildren and one great great grandson; his brother, Robert Davis of Sikeston, as well as his nieces, nephews and several cousins.
In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by his son in law, Jackie Groves; his sister, Margaret Davis Randolph and his step father, Virgil W. Owings.
Services with full military honors are being planned for a later date at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
McMikle Funeral Home of Sikeston is in charge of arrangements.
