Joyce Hise Gilmore, age 89, formerly of rural Charleston, MO, died Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Columbia, MO.
Born May 31, 1937, at Mississippi County, MO, to the late Clifton Herbert Hise and Jewell Sybill Walker Hise, she was a graduate of Anniston High School. Joyce went on to further her education at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau and received her degree in elementary education. She would then embark on a lifetime career of education in Mississippi County Schools. She began teaching at the Pinhook School and then the Dorena School and in 1971 moved to the newly built Warren E. Hearnes Elementary School in Charleston where she remained until her retirement in 1996. She returned to the Hearnes school the following year as the facilitator for the Parents as Teachers program, holding that position for the next 12 years.
Joyce was a woman of strong faith and lived that in her every day walk with Christ. She was a member of the Charleston United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and had been member of the Katherine Boone Music Club, the Charleston Teachers Association and the Missouri State Teachers Association.
On August 11,1962, she married James Henry “Jamie” Gilmore, and he survives
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Kerry (Ginny) Gilmore and Joe Gilmore; son in law, Alan Hale Dant; and her grandchildren, Christopher Dant and Margaret Dant.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Gilmore Dant.
There is no visitation.
Family and friends may assemble for a graveside service at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Charleston.
Interment will follow under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
