Obituary

J.R. MATHIS, Age 90, a resident of Charleston, died Friday, October 09, 2009 at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Born December 13, 1918, at Parma, Missouri to the late Pink Joseph and Bettie Ann Lowery Mathis, he lived in Western Kentucky in his early years moving to Missouri as a young boy. Having lived in Mississippi County most of his life, he was a farmer having worked with the Vowels Farms for a number of years and was of Baptist Belief.

On May 9, 1936, he married Ardella Barber, who preceded him in death on July 5, 2000.

Surviving are: five daughters and two sons in law, Betty Ruth Passley of Fredericksburg, VA; Jo Ann Burk of Anna, IL; Donna Gail (Forrest) Marshall of York, SC; Debra (Barry) Ward of Fredericksburg, VA and Tammy Hale of Benton, MO; 21 grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, J.R. Stevens Mathis, one daughter, Alice Jean Decatur and by three sisters, Monica Hutton, Lola Rayburn and Ethel Mathis.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Charleston. His son in law, Forrest Marshall, will officiate

McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston is in charge of arrangements.
