JULIA CARTER DAVIS, age 97, a resident of St. Peters, formerly of Charleston and Cape Girardeau, died Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Barnes Hospital in St. Peters.
She was born March 9, 1917 in the Birds Point Community of Mississippi County to the late John and Burnette Raffety Swank. She lived in Charleston until moving to Cape Girardeau in 1969 then moved to St. Peters in 1999.
She was a graduate of Diehlstadt High School and worked as a Nurse Aide at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau until retirement at age 82.
In 1938 she married Lonnie Carter who preceded her in death November 14, 1965. They operated Charleston Lumber and Supply Company and Carter's Bait Shop in Charleston.
She is survived by two sons, John Patrick Carter (Margaret) of St. Charles and Lonnie Michael Carter (Gerrie) of Dixon, IL and four grandchildren: Andrew, Michael and Katherine Carter of St. Charles, MO and Angela Carter of DeKalb, IL .
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Loren Swank and Bernard Swank, two sisters, Wilma Henson and Ruth Hales, a daughter Margaret Ann Carter and an infant son.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Rev. Mike McKinney, pastor of the Southside Baptist Church of Charleston, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Carter, Michael Carter, Robert Carter Jr., Billy French, Tom Neal, and Tim Vickery.
