Lala Chaney Duke, 92, longtime resident of the Dogwood Community, died Sunday, July 25, 2021, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born January 1, 1929, at Matthews, MO, to the late John Rufus Chaney and Emma B. Sanders. Lala was a graduate of Canalou, MO. She was a member of the Dogwood United Methodist Church. Lala became the secretary of Dogwood Cemetery since 1963, where she worked for 40+ years. She also started working at Citizens Bank in 1972 and stayed there for 22 years. Lala worked as a door greeter for the Charleston Walmart, where she made a lot of friends. She was very famous throughout the county for her amazing cakes and pies. Her baking skills were amazing. She won first place at the Semo District Fair for her White Chocolate Cake. She had such outpouring love for her family and friends and especially for those that call the Dogwood Community home.
She was married to Hardy Wilson "H." Duke, Jr. on November 5, 1949, who preceded her in death on August 11, 2015.
Surviving are her two sons, Keith (Donna) Duke of Matthews, MO; Jim (Gail) Duke of New Madrid, MO; one daughter, Phyllis Duke McKinley; four grandchildren, Kyle (Valerie) Duke, Ryan (Holly) McKinley, Tara (Casey) Tatum, Natalie (Jim) Gordon; 7 great grandchildren, Cooper, Colton, Brooks, Layne, Jackson, Mackynzi, and Shelby.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry Chaney, Bill Chaney, Jewel Chaney and Phillip Chaney; two sisters, Lillie Mae Kem and Helen McLaurin; one infant brother and one infant sister.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until the funeral hour at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, July 29, 2021, at the Dogwood United Methodist Church. Chandler Landis, pastor of the Dogwood Church and Martin Lucas of East Prairie, will officiate.
A sunset interment will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
Pallbearers will be: Kyle Duke, Ryan McKinley, Tim Wagner, Casey Tatum, James Marcum, and Joe Jenkins.
