Obituary

LILLIAN CATHERINE COWSER, age 83, a resident of Charleston, died Friday morning, July 2, 2010, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

She was born April 9, 1927 in Crosno to the late William and Dura Duty Nolen. She had lived in Mississippi County her entire life moving to rural Charleston 1948. She was a lifetime member of New Bethel Baptist Church, and had taught 1st – 8th grades in the two room school at Deventer. She was employed with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Mississippi County USDA/ASCS for a number of years until her retirement. Following her retirement she assisted the Charleston Manor as a file clerk, and then volunteered her time helping senior citizens file taxes at the Charleston Nutrition Center. She was a longtime board member of the Charleston Nutrition Center where she served as secretary. For 26 years she was instrumental in making all arrangements for the annual Nolen Family Reunion..

On December 15, 1945 she married James Ruben Cowser who preceded her in death on October 30, 1984.

Surviving are one son, Jim Cowser of Benton, Arkansas; two daughters, Beverly Wright and Jenneth Jackson both of Charleston; four sisters, Modest Grider of Benton, KY, Bernice Culp of East Prairie, Beatrice Doorack and Ruth Scott both of St. Louis; 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

One daughter, Candace Yvonne Cowser, six brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 5, at the New Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Ted Wimberley, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Nolen, Ray Riley, Josh Shoffner, Chris Doorack, Charles Scott, and Terry Reeves.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Billy Joe Grider, Harold Nolen Sr., Conley Nolen, and William Culp.
