Obituary

LORENE BARKER SHEPARD, Age 97, died Monday, January 6, 2014, at her home near Matthews, Missouri.

She was born November 25, 1916, in Double Springs, AL, to the late Francis Newton and Essie Laura Barker Taylor. Shortly after she married Lorene moved to Matthews, where she farmed with her husband in Scott County and lived there until her death. She was a member of the New Madrid Baptist Church and a former member of the Eastern Star.

She spent her life spreading laughter and joy and was known as the "life of the party." Lorene was always on the verge of a smile or a laugh. She was also willing to do just about anything to make others laugh. She loved gags and jokes and often dressed up in disguises to play pranks on friends and family. Lorene and her sister once disguised themselves so well that even their husbands didn't recognize them.

Lorene's favorite color was red, and she was renowned for her red clothes and hats. Lorene also never missed a chance to "go to the dance" and did the Charleston well into her nineties.

Everyone who knew her also knew not to show up at her house unannounced unless they wanted a 12 gauge pointed at them. Lorene kept her shotgun by her bed and it was always loaded.

Lorene will be remembered for kind and loving heart. Everyone in the family thought they were the favorite by the time she got done loving on them. Even as she passed to the heavens her body was full of warmth that radiated from her loving heart.

On February 11, 1936, she married Herman Jasper Shepard, who preceded her in death, September 19, 1979.

Surviving are two sisters, Deloris Lingle, Sandy Springs, GA and Emma Lou Poppe of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren, Andrea Powers of Hot Springs, SD; David Powers of Custer, SD; Colleen Laconte of Chicgao, IL and Robert Powers of Philadelphia, MS; five great grandchildren, Delaney Laconte, Regan Laconte, Sarah Lorene Powers, Isaac Michael Powers and Chance Lyndon Powers.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Mozell Mahony and Connie Shepard; one grandson, Joseph Mahony; three brothers, Jimmy Taylor, Hampton Taylor and Keith Taylor and one sister, Veatrice Shepard.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 9, 2014 at the New Madrid Baptist Church in New Madrid. Rev. Jeff Polk, pastor, and Rev. Gene Lancaster, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery at Sikeston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
