Obituary

MARGIE ANN OWENS MICKEL, 85, of East Prairie, died Sunday, January 12, 2020, at the Bertrand Nursing Center.

Born July 24, 1934 in Gideon, MO, to the late Richard "Dick" Owens and Goldie Marguerite Owens. Following her graduation from Gideon High in 1952, she attended Central Methodist University, where she met the love of her life, Alan Mickel, and married him on February 6, 1954.

In 1967, Mr. Mickel accepted a job in the East Prairie School District, and they moved the family to East Prairie. She taught elementary education at Peach Orchard, Matthews Elementary, Dorena and East Prairie, as well as junior high English. In 1976, she became music teacher and choir director at East Prairie Junior High, until her retirement in 1994. She came out of retirement to teach music for one year at Charleston Middle School, served as a substitute teacher in the area and later became the facilitator for the East Prairie High School Spanish class from 2009-2014.

She gave many students piano lessons in her home and served as a pianist, organist and Sunday School teacher for her church, First Baptist Church of East Prairie.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Regina) Mickel of East Prairie; her daughter, Tracey Marguerite Mickel of East Prairie; grandchildren, Sheila (Andrew) Payne, Brittany (Cory) Ross, Elizabeth (Roger) Swann, Siphal Pei Chhor; and her great-grandchildren, Lucie, Eli, Caleb, Clare, Michael, Thomas, Leo, and Lincoln.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Mickel, her brother and sister in law, Dickie and Nelta Owens.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 16, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. until time for memorial services at 7:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church East Prairie. Steve Douglas and Mark Douglas, will officiate.
