IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marvin Lee
Butrum
December 10, 1937 – February 16, 2024
The Rev. Marvin Lee Butrum, Baptist minister and resident of Sikeston, entered into his Eternal home, Friday, February 16, 2024.
Marvin was born December 10, 1937, in St. Louis, MO, the oldest of eleven children to the late Marion Lee Butrum and Lola Marie Marchbanks Butrum. He received his master's degree in theology and began a lifelong ministry to Southern Baptist Churches all throughout Southeast Missouri. For 23 years, he served as pastor of the Temple Baptist Church in Sikeston and after his retirement from there, continued to minister as a supply minister and an interim pastor as needed. Marvin later became a member of the Murray Lane Baptist Church.
Marvin was a self-taught master of many trades, rather it be electrical, carpentry or plumbing. Those skills came in handy many times as a pastor as he was not only able to work on things of his own need but was also able to help maintain the church building and assist his fellow church members who needed a helping hand. He especially loved trout fishing at Roaring River State Park as a getaway from the hustle of life and passed those skills on to several generations of his family as well as friends. Marvin loved his family deeply and will certainly be missed.
On April 4, 1958, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Louise Long, who preceded him in death on May 21, 2012.
Surviving are his daughters, Diane (Tim) Chappell of Sikeston and Cindy (Mark) Reed of Greenville, SC: his grandchildren, Kent (Kyleigh) Chappell, Eric (Mykah) Chappell, Adam Reed, Abigail Reed (J.P.) Llarch, Isaiah Butrum and Josiah Butrum; great grandchildren, Kinleigh, Katelynn, Kolton, Brantlee, Maxwell and Beau Chappell; his sisters, Christine Averitt and Kathleen Young and his brother, Gary Butrum; also, a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Marvin Lynn Butrum; his brothers, Alfred, George, John, and Commodore "Corky" Butrum; and his sisters, Carolyn Sue "Cricket" Kinder, Kay Wren and an infant sibling.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 19, 2024, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Sikeston where funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2024. Rev. Joe McCullough, pastor of the Murray Lane Baptist Church of Sikeston, will officiate.
Interment will follow at the Unity Baptist Cemetery near Benton.
Pallbearers will be Kent Chappell, Eric Chappell, Ed Quertermous, Craig Quertermous, Andy Dicus and Owen Scheer.
