Myrtle "Sisser" Goodin Austin

Myrtle "Sisser" Goodin Austin, aged 77, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at her home in Charleston, MO.

Sisser was born on October 7, 1939 in Cairo, Illinois, the daughter of Sam Cox and Jane Mulkey Goodin.

Sisser is survived by her sister Dorothy Anne Goodin Brink (Charles L. Brink); her husband of fifty-three years, Bruce Raymond Austin; sons Sam Goodin Austin (Caroline Gibson Austin) and David Elgin Austin (Elizabeth DeBold Austin); grandchildren Catherine Jane Austin (Stephen Bruce Austin), Alex Samuel and Matthew Gibson Austin (Sam Goodin Austin); Reagan Kate, Ryan James, and Rory Bruce Austin (David Elgin Austin). She also leaves behind numerous loving nephews and nieces, relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and son, Stephen Bruce Austin (Sherry Crisel Austin).
Sisser was raised in Charleston, Missouri and graduated from Charleston High School in 1957. She attended one year at Mississippi State College for Women and later graduated with a Bachelor's in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1961 where she enjoyed being a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Sisser married the love of her life, Bruce Raymond Austin on April 6, 1963 and gave birth to three beautiful boys. She enjoyed being a homemaker, teacher, and community leader. Her family and the Charleston community were her world. Sisser was a lifetime member of the Charleston United Methodist Church, a member and former president of Junior Study Club (1969-1970), Lion's Club's Woman of the Year (1978), a member of PEO and United Methodist Women, and was the first female Cubmaster in Southeast Missouri. She taught for 2 years in Sikeston and 1 year in East Prairie before "retiring" to raise her sons, then returned to teaching for 10 years in the Charleston R1 School District the day after taking her youngest son David to college. She always relished the greetings and hugs that she received from her former students.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Charleston United Methodist Church, Charleston, Missouri, 63834. A funeral celebrating her life will be held the following day on Saturday, December 17 at 2:00 PM also at Charleston United Methodist Church, Charleston, Missouri, 63834. The Rev. J. Robert Webster, pastor, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be: Scott Brink, Jerry Don "Flipper" Naile, Jr., Frank Goodman, Tory Gunn, Jack Moxley and Branston Branam.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: John Goodin, Lester Goodin, Lee Goodin and Albert Goodin.
