NADINE BARNHILL SHOWMAKER, age 87, a resident of Charleston died Sunday, August 11, 2013, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
Born July 31st, 1926, to Lee and Pairlee Coffer Browning, she lived in Mississippi County all of her life.
She attended Southeast Missouri Teachers College in Cape Girardeau and taught in several rural schools including, Medley, Sassafrass Ridge and Rush Ridge. Nadine was co-owner of Barnhill's Restaurant and Truck Stop for a number of years. She was also a caseworker at the East Prairie Division of Family Services until retiring in 1996.
On May 17, 1945, in Osceola, AR, she married Edgar Barnhill who preceded her in death on April, 25, 1980. On October 10, 1986, in Benton, she was married to Harry Showmaker who preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 2012.
Prior to becoming a member of First Baptist Church of Charleston, she was a member of Wolf Island, Gravel Ridge and Unity Churches.
Nadine is survived by four children: Diann Volker (John) of Adams, TN, Sandra Layton (Larry) of Dexter, Eddie Barnhill (Mary) of Charleston and Debbie Crocker (Mark) of Sikeston ; 6 Grandchildren: Scott Suver of Mt. Vernon, Jonathan Layton (Jennifer) of Puxico, Kerry Evans (Matt) of Sikeston, Lee Barnhill (Becky) of Brandon, MS, Ashleigh Stratton (Ken) of Memphis, TN. and Kayla Townley (Brandon) of Benton. 7 Great-grandchildren: Jacob and Matthew Suver of Mt. Vernon, Jocelyn, Raylee and Zoie Layton of Puxico, Will Evans of Sikeston, and Presley Belle Stratton of Memphis, TN.
During her 26 years of marriage to Harry she developed a relationship with Harry's three children: Harry Lee Showmaker, Jr. (Jean) of Waxhaw, NC; Karen Gaertner (Art) of Decatur, AL, Phil Showmaker (Julie) of Sikeston; his 9 grandchildren: Harry Lee Showmaker III (Danielle) , Eric Lee Showmaker (Jaime), Melissa McCord (Jonathan), Martha Gaertner Thomas (Brian), Jeremy Gaertner (Katie), Erica Gaertner Hoskins (Alan), Gretchen Christian (Kevin), Jason Showmaker (Rebecca), Morgan Showmaker and many great grandchildren.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Hendrix and Alfrieda McAfee and one brother, Verlon Browning.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on Monday, August 12, 2013, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am Tuesday, August 13, 2013. Rev. Michael Brewer, pastor of First Baptist Church in Charleston, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Scott Suver, Jonathan Layton,Matt Evans,Lee Barnhill, Brandon Townley, Ken Stratton, Jacob Suver, and Matthew Suver.
