RICHARD WARREN HEARNES, JR., died on Friday, May 12, 2017. Beloved husband, for 52 years, of the late Suzanne Evans Hearnes; dear mother of Heather (Paul Allen and the late Michael) Kelley and Leslie (Marty) Huggins; dear grandfather of Sarah Kelley, Marshall and Ellie Huggins; our dear uncle, cousin and a friend to many.

Richard was born March 20, 1939 in Charleston, Missouri. He was the son of Richard Warren Hearnes and Dorothy Brown Hearnes.

The Hearnes family moved frequently and lived in some great places; Maine, New Jersey, West Virginia, Shreveport, Louisiana and Independence, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in Independence, Missouri in 1957.

His parents settled back in Charleston, Missouri in 1960, their hometown, where Dorothy's family had been Mississippi County pioneers. Dick's great, great grandfather, Frances Malette Brown bought farmland, and the family still owns some of that land.

The Hearnes family is very well known for their political history, serving the state of Missouri. Dick's uncle Warren E. Hearnes, was Secretary of State and served two consecutive terms as Governor of Missouri.

Dick married Suzanne Evans on June 7, 1961 in Charleston, Missouri. After living in Cape Girardeau, they moved to St. Louis, and in 1967 they moved to Kirkwood, where they lived until 2012.

Dick was a Civil Engineer with a degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He finished his long engineering career as a City Engineer for the City of Creve Coeur.

Dick was a very intelligent, athletic, active, outgoing person, who loved all sports, especially women's sports. He coached his daughters for many years while they were running for the Kirkwood Women's Track Club. Later in life, Dick took up golf, and LOVED it.

Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in October of 2006. He fought the disease hard, and continued to play golf for as long as he could. Dick was well loved by many people. He always had a smile on his face and a good story to tell.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:15 a.m., Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston, Mo. The Rev. J. Robert Webster, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Charleston, will officiate.

Interment will follow under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
