Samuel Rush Oliver, Sr. 74, of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2016.
Sam was born on February 13, 1941, in Charleston, Missouri, to the late Howard Dearmont Oliver and Margaret Rush Oliver. He lived most of his life in Mississippi County. Sam graduated high school from East Prairie in 1959, and then went on to attend Southeast Missouri State University. In 1960, Sam enlisted with the National Guard where he served until 1966. Sam also had the distinction of being a member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge #407 AF and AM, a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite.
On September 23, 1978, he married Peggy Ann Alcorn, who preceded him in death on March 22, 2012.
There were not many jobs that, at some point in time, Sam had not worked. Be it real estate agent or farmer, landscaper or dragline operator, Sam took much pride in a hard day's work. Most of his life he spent working on the family farm, D.Oliver & Sons. He later worked for Watkins Motor lines as an independent contractor for several years. Recently Sam retired from St. Johns Levee & Drainage District as the maintenance supervisor. Regardless of what he was doing he always had a smile on his face, a kind word to say, and always left you with the impression that everything was going to be ok. Sam truly was one of a kind.
Survivors include two sons and two daughters: Jason Douglas Oliver, Samuel Rush Oliver Jr., and wife Leigh Tyler, Helen Margaret and husband Jeff Renaud, and Martha Dearmont Oliver, all of Charleston, Missouri; four brothers and one sister, Homer Oliver and wife Rosemary, Clyda and husband John W.L.
