Scott O'Neil Spinka, 72, passed away peacefully, in the presence of loved ones, on Thursday, March 28, 2019 at his residence in Pittsboro, NC.
He was born on May 8, 1946 in Los Angeles, California, to Archie O'Neil and Evaleen May (Crouch) Huckins and was raised by his mother and his stepfather, James Spinka. Following his graduation from high school, he joined the navy in 1963. During his naval service he graduated from the Hyman G. Rickover US Naval Nuclear Power School, and was part of the last class trained on diesel submarines, as well as the first class trained on nuclear submarines. He helped to build the USS John C Calhoun, and completed a number of patrols on the USS John C. Calhoun, as well as on the USS Finback, prior to his discharge.
As President of a successful medical marketing firm for many years, he had lived in Nashville,TN and St. Louis, MO before moving to Pittsboro, NC. He enjoyed a genuine love of music, played the guitar, loved to draw, and read, and most importantly to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and his dachshund Vinnie. He will be remembered for his kind, generous spirit, his exuberance for life, and his love of family.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 40 years, Susan Brown Spinka of Pittsboro, NC; his daughters, Michelle Spinka (Amy Kennedy) of Seattle, WA, Amanda (Matt) Pfennig of Pittsburg, PA, Erin (Anton) Garcia-Fernandez of Jackson, TN and Laura Spinka of Durham, NC; his grandchildren Libby Garcia-Fernandez and Oskar Pfennig; brother Gary (Lori) Huckins of Mystic, CT; and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step father, and one brother, James Huckins.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 5, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Charleston from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Robert J. Webster, pastor, will officiate.
Military Graveside Rites will be conducted at the IOOF Cemetery followed by interment under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
