Shirley Bernice Flye, age 85, better known as Bernice, formerly of Sikeston, died Monday, January 24, 2022, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Parkridge, IL.

She was born April 21, 1936, at Tiptonville, TN, to the late Austin E. Haley and Susie Lucas Haley. Bernice was loved by everyone, from her soft heart to her telling her life story, to being hilarious. She loved her family, to cook, gardening, singing and her gospel music. Everyone knew Bernice was feisty and she "didn't play". She was a devoted member of the St. John Baptist Church in Sikeston. Bernice was a good disciplinarian; she babysat her grandkids and anyone else's kids who needed it. Bernice enjoyed watching her gospels on the VCR and watching her cowboys on Gunsmoke.

She married Roy Lee Flye, who preceded her in death.

Surviving is her son in law, Willie Glispie; her grandchildren, Stephen (Renee) Flye, Crystal Flye, Anthony Flye, Faddie Flye, Vernon Flye, and Darrius Flye; one brother, J. L. (Peggy) Lucas; two sisters, Janet Miller and Erma Walker; 30 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren, with one on the way; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Flye Glispie; three brothers, Cletus Haley, Joe Haley and Austin Haley; three sisters, Sonya Long, Arzalia Jones and Dorothy Chamberlain.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Kendall Morris will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Charleston, at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 10, 2021, under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston at a later day.

Pallbearers will be: Steve Flye, Anthony Flye, Faddie Flye, Vernon Flye, Darrius Flye and Willie Harrington.

Honorary pallbearers will be: J.L. Lucas, Charles Flye, Willie Glispie and Tori Rose.
