STAFF SERGEANT CYNTHIA R. TAYLOR, age 39, formerly of Charleston, was killed on Saturday, April 16, 2011 by a suicide bomber while serving with the 101st Airborne Sustainment Brigade at the Forward Operation Base in Kabul Gamberi, Afghanistan.
She was born on May 10, 1971 in Sikeston to Judy Ann Hart who survives of Charleston and the late Gary Dale Taylor. A graduate of Columbus, GA High School, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Programming from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama. In 2003 she enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY as a member of the 101st Airborne Sustainment Brigade and was a wheel mechanic.
She had served in prior deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and was serving her second deployment to Afghanistan when she was killed by a suicide bomber. Her citations and awards include: Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, Driver Badge and the Mechanic Badge.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Spc-E4 Maggie Jean Taylor stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC; one son, Joseph Lee Goodwin of Clarksville, TN; one uncle, David Hart of Charleston; her fiancé`, Paul Smith of Clarksville, TN; also two granddaughters, Madison Elizabeth Sisk of Clarksville, TN and Emma Hope Crouch of Ft. Bragg, NC.
Preceding her in death were her maternal grandparents, Richard and Frances Metheny Hart; her paternal grandparents, Lee and Nola Tate Taylor; one aunt, Frances Cooper; and two uncles, Charles Wayne Hart and Larry Joe Hart.
Visitiation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the McMikle Funeral Home Funeral in Charleston where Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. with Full Military Honors.
Her body will then be cremated and private family interment will be conducted at a later date.
