Obituary

Susan Lee Cox, 73, of East Cape Girardeau, Ill., died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born on Sept. 1, 1947, in Poplar Bluff to Robert C. and Pauline (Hudson) Walker of Charleston, who preceded her in death.  Her sister, Carrol Jean Walker Fisher, also preceded her in death.

A 1965 graduate of Charleston High School, Cox worked as a bookkeeper, secretary and office manager at several local businesses, including many years at the Mississippi County office of the University of Missouri Extension Service. She was a familiar face to many, lending volunteer efforts to many different organizations, including the Girl Scouts, Mississippi County 4-H, and the American Red Cross, where she served for many years, assisting local residents in a number of areas, including helping to arrange leave for active duty military members during family emergencies.

Most recently, she put her skills to work during the 2019 flooding in East Cape Girardeau, assisting residents with temporary relocations, providing shelter for their pets and making daily trips through the floodwaters to Cape Girardeau to deliver food to the National Guard troops conducting flood relief efforts.

She never hesitated to share her organizational skills or opinion on any subject, and was always quick to provide instruction whenever she felt it necessary. She loved books and animals of all shapes and sizes, many of which she took in.

Possessed of a big heart and a ready smile, she was known to many as "Grandma Susan," and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. She was an avid crafter seldom seen without some project in hand, and enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking.

Possessed of a strong faith, she was a nearly a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston.
She is survived by one son, Robert D. Cox of Perryville, and another she claimed, Jason A. Tubbs of East Cape Girardeau, Ill., along with two step-granddaughters, Audra and Allie Grunden of Hillsboro, Mich., and several cousins, along with many friends and acquaintances.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020, at the First Baptist Church in Charleston, followed by a funeral service at the church officiated by Rev. Gerald Collier.

Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.

Online condolences may be shared at www.mcmiklefuneralhome.com and memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
